MGNREGA Changes Spark Opposition Fury, Conspiracy Claims

A recently enacted law, VB-G RAM G, is drawing intense fire from opposition parties who allege it represents a deliberate dismantling of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have publicly denounced the legislation, characterizing it as a ‘well-planned conspiracy’ aimed at weakening a vital rural safety net.

The criticism centers on provisions within VB-G RAM G that critics fear will effectively curtail MGNREGA’s scope and funding. Gandhi specifically drew parallels to the 2016 demonetization, suggesting a similar disregard for the economic consequences of the policy change. Kharge echoed this sentiment, directly attributing the decision to Prime Minister Modi.

While proponents, like Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, argue the new law aligns with the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, opponents contend it undermines the foundational principles of the employment guarantee scheme. Concerns are also being raised about the potential impact on rural livelihoods and the broader economy. Some analysts question whether the changes represent genuine reform, while others see them as a precursor to a significant reduction in MGNREGA’s reach.
