The Punjab State Legislative Assembly convened a special session to voice strong opposition to recent developments seen as eroding the federal character of the Indian Constitution. A resolution was passed protesting alterations to the constitutional framework, signaling a growing rift between the state government and the central authorities.
Simultaneously, the Assembly condemned the implementation of the ‘VB-G RAM G’ scheme, a new rural employment guarantee program. Lawmakers argued the scheme undermines the existing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which critics allege has been systematically weakened by the central government through funding restrictions and policy changes. Concerns were raised that the new scheme will negatively impact the livelihoods of vulnerable populations.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has also entered the fray, writing to Prime Minister Modi requesting the suspension of the VB-G RAM G Act. Reports indicate a deliberate effort to curtail MGNREGA prior to the introduction of the new scheme, raising questions about the government’s commitment to rural employment guarantees. The opposition contends the changes represent a dismantling of a crucial social safety net.
