The Telangana State Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution rejecting the central government’s proposed changes to the MGNREGA scheme. The resolution calls for the restoration of the original MGNREGA Act, signaling strong opposition to the newly proposed VB-G RAMG Bill.
The move comes amid growing concerns that the new legislation centralizes control and shifts costs to states, potentially weakening the employment guarantee for rural populations. Critics, including economist Jean Drèze, have described the proposed bill as a ‘surgical strike on employment guarantee.’
The Telangana Assembly’s decision highlights a growing divide between the state government and the Centre regarding rural development policies. While Karnataka has also indicated reluctance to adopt the VB-G RAMG Act, Telangana has taken a firm stance by formally rejecting the proposed changes through a legislative resolution. This action underscores the state’s commitment to maintaining the existing framework of MGNREGA, which has been crucial in providing employment and economic support to rural households.
