A planned demonstration concerning reservation quotas in Jammu and Kashmir was abruptly stopped by the regional government. Simultaneously, Srinagar MP and National Conference leader, was placed under house arrest. The action preempted a student-led protest advocating for changes to existing reservation policies. Several other political leaders, including Mehbooba Mufti and Ruhullah Mehdi, were also placed under house arrest. The government has not released an official statement detailing the reasons for the preventative measures, but sources indicate concerns over potential unrest. Farooq Abdullah, a prominent political figure, has publicly defended the detained leaders, criticizing the government’s actions as undemocratic. The cancelled protest aimed to address perceived inadequacies in the current reservation system for students in the region.
