Trump Claims Russia Initially Desired Ukraine's Success

Following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Russia, in his assessment, initially ‘wanted Ukraine to succeed.’ The remark, made publicly after the closed-door discussion, contrasts sharply with the current ongoing conflict.
Trump indicated that a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia is approximately ‘90% done,’ though he acknowledged no immediate breakthrough in negotiations. He did not elaborate on the specifics of the proposed agreement.
Zelenskyy, for his part, revealed openness to establishing a demilitarized zone within Ukraine’s heavily industrialized eastern regions, a concession potentially aimed at de-escalating hostilities. This proposal focuses on areas critical to Ukraine’s industrial capacity.
The meeting occurred as the Russia-Ukraine war enters its 1,404th day, with continued fighting and no clear path to a comprehensive ceasefire. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction, prompting international efforts to mediate a resolution.
