Bangladesh is in a period of national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. The nation has declared three days of state mourning, and her funeral is scheduled for December 31st. Zia, a key figure in Bangladeshi politics and a long-time rival of current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, passed away after a prolonged illness.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, recalling Zia’s contributions to Bangladesh’s democracy and the strong ties between India and Bangladesh. He stated that her vision would continue to guide the partnership between the two nations. Modi specifically acknowledged Zia’s role in fostering a positive relationship with India during her time in office.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has postponed Tuesday’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches as a mark of respect. Zia’s death marks the end of an era in Bangladeshi politics, characterized by a decades-long rivalry with Sheikh Hasina that shaped the country’s political landscape. Her political party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has been a major force in opposition to the ruling Awami League.
