Bangladesh has withdrawn from the T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in India. The decision, announced today, stems from escalating safety and security concerns raised by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Details regarding the specific threats remain undisclosed, but officials have indicated a lack of sufficient assurances regarding the team’s security during the tournament.
The move follows recent incidents involving Bangladeshi cricketers, including death threats received by a Shiv Sena (UBT) leader after he voiced opposition to the inclusion of Bangladeshi players in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were also instructed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to release Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL squad for the 2026 season.
The BCB has reportedly requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to consider relocating Bangladesh’s matches outside of India. The ICC is currently reviewing the request. This development casts a shadow over the tournament and raises questions about the overall security arrangements for participating teams. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
