India has a new chess star. Arjun Erigaisi has etched his name in the history books, becoming the first Indian player to reach the podium at the World Rapid & Blitz Championships since the legendary Viswanathan Anand. Erigaisi claimed a bronze medal in the World Blitz event, adding to a strong performance in the Rapid competition.
This achievement marks a significant moment for Indian chess, signaling a resurgence of talent. The Championships, held recently, also saw Magnus Carlsen extend his dominance, winning a record-ninth World Blitz title. However, Erigaisi’s performance stole a significant portion of the spotlight, demonstrating his potential on the global stage. The young Indian Grandmaster’s success comes at the end of a challenging year, making the medals all the more decisive and rewarding. An incident involving Carlsen and arbiter Levon Aronian, stemming from a display of frustration, briefly overshadowed the competition, but Erigaisi’s accomplishment remained a central narrative.
