External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar personally delivered a condolence letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tarique Rahman, son of the late Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. The meeting took place in Dhaka on the sidelines of Zia’s funeral, which drew thousands of mourners. Jaishankar also lauded Khaleda Zia’s political vision during the encounter.
Zia, Bangladesh’s first female head of state, served as Prime Minister for multiple terms and was a prominent figure in the country’s political landscape. Her death marks the end of an era in Bangladeshi politics, characterized by both significant development and periods of political turmoil.
During his visit to Dhaka, Jaishankar also held a meeting with the Speaker of the Pakistan National Assembly, highlighting the complex diplomatic engagements occurring amidst the mourning period for the former Prime Minister.
